What I'm Reading to My Kids

Let's just jump right into it.

Boo... And I Mean It

Another Junie B. Jones book -- this one about Halloween. Junie B. is scared of Halloween because she knows the TRUTH about it. Bats in your hair truths!
The real truth is that my kids enjoy these books. We laugh at quite a few of the scenes and talk about Junie B.'s misbehavior. Our favorite scene was when Junie B. taped a peanut into her stuffed elephant's trunk. That got several snickers. I was glad there was an image to go along with it.
Oh, and in case you didn't know, cows aren't afraid of anything. Junie B. says so.

Duck and Goose Find a Pumpkin

Pretty sure we read this one last month. It is a family favorite. My toddler (age 2) is proud because every time Duck or Goose says, "No," she can call out the answer. Actually, my 6-year-old fights for that honor too. I make them take turns.

So, yep, a family favorite. And I've got them saying, "The what?" with real emphasis!

Winnie the Pooh Happy Halloween

I'm not sure why we were hitting Halloween themed books. It was a definite trend though, despite Easter being a more "timely" topic. But, obviously, my kids were into Halloween books this month.
This is just fun for my youngest, age 2, to point out things. We seek more things than what is suggested. I ask for things of a certain color. Or I'll ask them to count the number of something.
It's very much along the lines of what I do with the next book...

Just A Little Sick

Just a Little Sick

Yes, i love Little Critter books by Mercer Mayer. Right now this one (and the next 2) are favorites because the phrases are simpler. My 6-year-old feels brave enough to try reading -- which makes me quite happy.

As for the book, well, Little Critter thought being sick was fun... until he had to go to the doctor and stay in bed instead of play with his friends!

Just Pick Us, Please

Another Little Critter book... I think we have over a dozen (at least) and I keep buying more. These books came as a packaged deal at Costco. There were 5 or 6 of them cellophaned together. All of them are listed as "My First I Can Read" books, so the sentences are simple.

This particular book is about the Critter Club organizing a pet adoption party.

Just An Adventure At Sea

Just An Adventure At Sea

The last of the Little Critter books for this month. Looks like Littler Critter's Dad got a boat.
(Personal note: I wonder what Mama Critter thought of that?)
Dad and Little Critter fix it up and take it out for a fishing trip. They should've just stayed home.
Seriously.
It's a hilariously BAD fishing trip. Even the fish laugh at them.

Doc McStuffin Look and Find

Yes, I am growing bored with this one -- that's why I'm putting it last! It is requested almost daily though. I'm making the best of it that I can with some extras.
Extras like:
  • Find the sad pumpkin
  • How many hearts are there?
  • What are the names of the birds?
  • Which toy do you like most?
You know, anything to break up the monotony of reading the same book so frequently.

Unless someone says something, I'm going to drop down on my write-ups. Since we re-read so many of the same books, I'm only going to talk about a book that's new or if we're utilizing it in a "new-to-us" way. I don't want to bore you with repetition (or the fact that I do read Doc McStuffin at least twice a week and often daily). My husband gets stuck reading it a lot too.

Summer Reading

Yes, I know there is still a month left to the school year. Kindergarten has been hard for us. Daily homework was beyond unexpected. I've been given a list of what my eldest needs to know BEFORE entering Grade 1. Let's just say that I am not pleased. I might as well be homeschooling her...

Which is the point, in a way, to this section. I've received a nice supply of Grade 1 teacher materials from a friend who recently moved. The timing is perfect. So, for the summer, I will be homeschooling my kids. I'll be posting about what I'm using (and it'll be the gifted stuff) and how it's going.

That's it for today. I think it's enough. If you homeschool or are interested in trialing it with us for the summer, let me know. I'd love to chat with you.
