TM's Jelly Roll Quilt

Months ago I came up with the BRILLIANT idea to make a quilt with the kids over the summer...
It didn't happen. (Thank goodness. We're not there sewing-wise yet.)
But I had already purchased a single Jelly Roll from Joann. This past weekend I decided to view a few YouTube videos and make my own. The 2 videos I found the most helpful are linked below.
Easy Beginner Quilting Tutorial
How to Make A Jelly Roll Quilt
Things I learned:
  • 1 jelly roll is enough for a 4 year-old's quilt, but nothing else
  • when doing a smaller size quilt, cutting the strips in half would be wise
  • using fleece for batting, backing, and binding is super simple

Fleece as batting, backing, and binding, you say?

No one has mentioned this. It's something I figured out quite by accident.
TM wanted the purple fleece I'd purchased to make her pants for the back of her jelly roll quilt. I shrugged and said ok without thinking about it. Then, when I laid the jelly roll quilt top out, I realized that the fleece was thick enough to justify NOT using batting.
Yay!
Next I figured I could simply turn the edge of the fleece over the raw quilt edge and seam it down. Since that would eliminate the need for binding, I was all for it. I cut the fleece 1/2" wider than the quilt top (after I'd stitched the top to the fleece). I folded the fleece edge over the edge of the quilt top and zigzagged it into place.

I've heard that jelly roll quilts ONLY take an hour. Not true. I know I spent at least 4 hours total getting this one done and I took A LOT of shortcuts by using the fleece. TM loves it though, so worth all the effort.

Of course EG wants one too.
TM wants a bigger one for her bedroom.
And the list of requests continues to grow.
