Weekly Round-up for September 17

This is coming out a little late due to illness -- one freakishly weird pounding headache. Probably the summer flu. Icky. Either way, I'm keeping it brief because we did fewer things last week!
Things we did this past week:
  • 2 failed science experiments
  • Made banana bread with TM
  • An ornament for Halloween
  • Finished the formatting and set The Tea Party up on all retail sites
  • Completed first drafts for books 3 and 4 in the Emma & Ava series
  • Released Little Witch Girl in paperback

Failed Science Experiments:

Picture
We decided to attempt a 3 ingredient slime.
  • Glue
  • Corn starch
  • food coloring
TM's slime turned into a sticky mess. It never reached the point where we could play with it.

Poor EG's slime was nothing but sticky glue-paste. Since TM's hadn't worked out, we didn't bother continuing to add corn starch to it.

EG did have the longest time spent cleaning her hands so they no longer resembled the Wicked Witch of the West!

We also tried a 3 ingredient flubber that never thickened. I tossed it in the trash without taking a picture.
That's the best of this last week. See you next week, hopefully healthy and with more to share.

TM's Jelly Roll Quilt

9/9/2019

Months ago I came up with the BRILLIANT idea to make a quilt with the kids over the summer...
It didn't happen. (Thank goodness. We're not there sewing-wise yet.)
But I had already purchased a single Jelly Roll from Joann. This past weekend I decided to view a few YouTube videos and make my own. The 2 videos I found the most helpful are linked below.
Easy Beginner Quilting Tutorial
How to Make A Jelly Roll Quilt
Things I learned:
  • 1 jelly roll is enough for a 4 year-old's quilt, but nothing else
  • when doing a smaller size quilt, cutting the strips in half would be wise
  • using fleece for batting, backing, and binding is super simple

Fleece as batting, backing, and binding, you say?

No one has mentioned this. It's something I figured out quite by accident.
TM wanted the purple fleece I'd purchased to make her pants for the back of her jelly roll quilt. I shrugged and said ok without thinking about it. Then, when I laid the jelly roll quilt top out, I realized that the fleece was thick enough to justify NOT using batting.
Yay!
Next I figured I could simply turn the edge of the fleece over the raw quilt edge and seam it down. Since that would eliminate the need for binding, I was all for it. I cut the fleece 1/2" wider than the quilt top (after I'd stitched the top to the fleece). I folded the fleece edge over the edge of the quilt top and zigzagged it into place.

I've heard that jelly roll quilts ONLY take an hour. Not true. I know I spent at least 4 hours total getting this one done and I took A LOT of shortcuts by using the fleece. TM loves it though, so worth all the effort.

Of course EG wants one too.
TM wants a bigger one for her bedroom.
And the list of requests continues to grow.
