What I'm Reading

Gonna keep this short and sweet. Covering all the books. Links are Amazon affiliates.

Quick reminder, if you're looking for someone who only reports on books from a single genre, I am not that person. I read widely and talk about it.

#murdertrending

I'm only at Chapter 3 as of this writing. This story is seriously cool, if disturbing. The premise is an app has been monetized with government sanctioned killing of convicted felons for the amusement and entertainment of our population. This happened because we got a former reality star as president who likes to make money.
Whatever you think of the sitting "former reality star" president, our jails have been for-profit businesses for quite awhile. I think we've got W to thank for that but I'm not interesting in researching it right now, so that's an uninformed opinion. This story is simply taking it to the extreme -- the extreme being a viewing public hungry and demanding more murders and the ends to which those in control will go.

The story is captivating. I'm definitely hooked, even though it'll probably take me a few days (or a week plus) to get through it. Thank goodness I read fast.

Whiskerella

My girls and I continue to enjoy the adventures of one Harriet Hamsterbone, a twelve year old orgercat slaying princess of the Hamster Kingdom. She's up against fairy magic in this original retelling of Cinderella.

This is book 5 in the series. We're reading it out of order and it's fine. I do suggest starting with Harriet the Invincible -- it's book 1 and a hilarious retelling of Sleeping Beauty.

Write to Market

I've finished this one. Twice. I'm still working my way through all of the "homework." It's fascinating to understand the publishing business, especially the independent side, more clearly.

Mr. Wrong

Working my way through this contemporary romance. I know there's a steamy sex scene toward the end, but I'm not there yet. I'm simply loving the dialogue between all the characters.

A Man With One Of Those Faces

Reading out of pure curiosity. This book is well ranked but I'm not yet sure what category I'd put it in. Got a slow start -- left me a wee bit confused (it's set in Ireland). Then, just as I felt like I was starting to get it, the dying man tries to brutally kill our hero.

Now there's a lot more detail coming out about our hero, a guy who can pretty much pass for anyone, especially when your mind isn't as sharp as it once was. It's a thriller, but you're going to end up snorting and busting a gut quite a few times on your way through it.
That's all I've got time to report on this month. It's been busy, busy, busy. School starting gives me plenty of time write -- it just came with a whole heaping helping of other stuff that tires a person out.

Pink and Purple Pancakes

My kids love pancakes, especially brightly colored versions of the recipe their babysitter found. The original recipe is on AllRecipes.com but I'm posting it below for you.
Pancake Ingredients:
  • 1.5 c flour
  • 3.5 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 TBSP sugar
  • 1.25 c milk
  • 1 egg
  • 3 TBSP melted butter
Directions:
  1. Combine dry ingredients and mix well.
  2. Add in milk, egg, and butter. Mix well.
  3. Add in food coloring (We use AmeriColor available on Amazon)
  4. Cook in a greased skillet
The kids love making these in a variety of colors, but pink and purple seem to be the winners. I'm planning to buy big bottles of the pink and purple food coloring because we go through it faster than the other colors.

I make one batch then split it so each kid gets a bowl for their color choice. My eldest remains firmly in the pink camp. My youngest is much more willing to experiment. Thankfully, they will eat any color pancakes.

Even better, these can be frozen between pieces of wax paper. This is critical for my youngest who takes after my baby brother. She wants pancakes every morning and I don't often have the time to make a fresh batch. So, out of the freezer come the leftover pancakes. 30 seconds or so in the microwave and my youngest is a happy kiddo!
