Abstract Rainbow Wall

I started in January...

My eldest asked for a rainbow on her wall. I said, "Sure, sweetie. I can do that." Then began the Pinterest searches for inspiration. The more I saw, the less I wanted a standard rainbow arching across a wall.

This is despite the fact that that is probably exactly what my 4-year old wanted when she asked. Though I'm not completely sure because at one point she did request that her ENTIRE room be a rainbow.

By April I was only into the oranges!

Finally I came up with an abstract design of circles that I liked. Let's just be real and say that I was the only person who could "SEE" this design. But the kiddo agreed to it anyway. She's got faith in her mother's artist abilities.

This idea turned out to be a time consuming one. I worked in fits of starts and stops. It was wonderful to see progress while at the same time frustrating to realize how much more needed to be done.

Something about getting to orange spurred me on...

And, luckily, the reds and pinks went on a lot faster. By faster I mean there were fewer coats needed to make the circles opaque. I also decided to scale back the design a bit.

When I put the red row up, my daughter got home from school and squealed. She was so excited that we were nearly to pink. She even dragged her father into her room to admire my work.

Then she ordered me to "get [her] some purple. It has to have purple, Mommy."
So now its May and I've added the requested purple and finished this side of the room (minus the touch-ups--like covering over the pink circles in the upper left). It looks great and I'm very pleased with how it turned out.

Earthworms Are Easy

My daughter is fascinated by earthworms. Can't say I blame her. Earthworms are pretty cool.

With the arrival of spring in central Illinois, it's finally time to get outside and dig in the garden. That means earthworms aplenty.

We worked up this earthworm habitat loosely based on the instructions at We-Made-That.

My daughter was so proud of it that it went to preschool for show and tell at her preschool. Twice.
Every time she digs up another earthworm, it gets added to the habitat. And she's pretty dedicated to adding water via a spray bottle daily.

Thank goodness for a toy / educational product that didn't cost a penny.

Sand Pit

After saving for 8 years, we finally turned our backyard into a money pit. Not kidding.

But it in the process, we learned the preschooler likes sand.

At first it was simply a pile of it near where the landscaper worked.

We even through a party and had another kid over to play in the sand.
When it came time to use that sand, well, let's just say the preschooler was vocal about how bad that idea was.

So the landscaper built her another pile on a tarp her dad put down on the grass nearby. This did alright. She was even willing to cover the sand pile herself at night.

Then ants moved in. I can still hear the outraged screeches at the ants.

So so we removed the beans from her turtle shaped bean box, transported it out to the backyard from our garage, and put ant-free sand in it. Finally. Done.

Do do you think she'll lose interest within a week?
