"Can we go for a bike ride?" my eldest asked. She was already climbing onto her bike; not waiting for my response. "I have to make dinner." Huge sigh and groan. "Mom, you always have to make dinner." "Yeah, well, you guys always want to eat dinner and someone has to make it." I picked up my toddler and carried her into the house followed by my eldest and a series of whines. "Pick out something to color," I instructed them. My toddler, who hadn't bothered to learn how to walk, scooted to the craft cart. She was quickly pulling things out and tossing them to the floor. The elder kid started to cry and complain again. In less than a minute, I was screaming at them to stop screaming at each other. The entire evening was spiralling and it was a routine night. That's what being a mom feels like: A Horrible Spiral of IckI am not doing a good job combating it. While the weather was still nice, I let the kids play outside with the door open so I could see and hear them. We ended up with a lot of flies in the house. I still burnt dinner a few times. Now that it is cold, things are a tad easier. I send the kids to the basement or, if they are being clingy, they help set the table, clean up, and do whatever task I can assign them. Please know that we do not use chores as punishment. Chores are what everyone has to do and, if you want mommy to play with you, you help because then mommy gets done faster. Is it working perfect? Hell, no. I still yell at the kids at least twice a week. But it is better. I was yelling at them multiple times a day. So a win of sorts. Erica Monroe (http://ericamonroe.com/) does not write your typical regency heroine. Nope. Erica's heroines are unique and not afraid to mix it up. Or blow it up. Her newest series is called Covert Heiresses. The first book, I Spy a Duke, is out at all major retailers.
